ABEL PRIZE

Masaki Kashiwara won the 2025 Abel Prize for contributions to algebraic analysis and representation theory, notably in D-modules and crystal bases. The Abel Prize, established in 2002, honors Niels Henrik Abel and is considered the Nobel equivalent for mathematics, awarding 7.5 million kroner. About the Abel Prize

It was established by the Norwegian Parliament in 2002 to honor Niels Henrik Abel, a Norwegian mathematician.

The prize is widely regarded as equivalent to a Nobel Prize for mathematics since there is no Nobel Prize specifically for this field.

Administered by the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, the Abel Prize awards 7.5 million kroner (roughly $720,000) and includes a glass plaque designed by Norwegian artist Henrik Haugan.

Every year, an expert committee selects the recipient based on advice from the International Mathematical Union (IMU) and the European Mathematical Society (EMS).

About Niels Henrik Abel

Niels Henrik Abel was a mathematician from Norway who lived from 1802 to 1829.

His most famous achievement was providing the first complete proof that the general quintic equation cannot be solved using radicals. This problem had puzzled mathematicians for over 250 years.

He lived in extreme poverty and died of tuberculosis at the age of 26.

About Masaki Kashiwara

Masaki Kashiwara, a 78-year-old Japanese mathematician, received the Abel Prize for his contributions to algebraic analysis and representation theory.

The award recognizes two key innovations: the development of the theory of D-modules and the discovery of crystal bases.

PRACTICE QUESTION

 Q. Consider the following statements regarding the Abel Prize:

  1. The Abel Prize specifically recognizes outstanding contributions in the field of theoretical physics.
  2. The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters administers the Abel Prize.
  3. The Abel Prize is awarded annually on the anniversary of Niels Henrik Abel's birth.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

A) 1 only

B) 2 only

C) 2 and 3 only

D) 1 and 3 only

Answer: B

Statement 1 is incorrect: The Abel Prize is awarded for outstanding scientific work in the field of mathematics. It is often referred to as the "Nobel Prize of mathematics" because there is no Nobel Prize in this field.

Statement 2 is correct: The Abel Prize is awarded and administered by the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters on behalf of the Norwegian government.

Statement 3 is incorrect: Niels Henrik Abel was born in August 1802. The Abel Prize is awarded annually, however, the ceremony date can vary.
