Context: India successfully test-fired indigenously-developed new generation medium-range ballistic missile Agni Prime from the Odisha coast, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) sources said.
About Agni Prime:
- Agni-P is a new generation advanced variant of Agni class of missiles.
- It is a two-stage canisterised missilewith range capability between 1,000 and 2,000 km.
- The ballistic missile weighs 50 per cent less than Agni 3and can be launched from rail and road and stored for a longer period and transported all across the country as per operational requirements.
- The double stage missile will be lighter and much sleekerthan its predecessor ‘Agni-1’.
Agni Missile Series:
- The Agni missile is a family of medium to intercontinental range ballistic missiles developed by India, named after one of the five elements of nature.
- Agni missiles are long range, nuclear weapons capable, surface to surface ballistic missiles. The first missile of the series,Agni-I was developed under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Program (IGMDP)and tested in 1989.
- After its success, Agni missile program was separated from the IGMDP upon realizing its strategic importance.
