AIMC SYSTEM

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is implementing Automated & Intelligent Machine-aided Construction (AIMC) to address delays in national highway projects. AIMC combines smart machines and real-time data sharing, ensuring construction stays on schedule and meets quality standards. It uses GPS-Aided Motor Graders, Intelligent Compaction Rollers, and Single Drum/Tandem Vibratory Rollers.

Context:

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) is implementing Automated & Intelligent Machine-aided Construction (AIMC) to address delays in national highway projects.

What is the AIMC system?

The system combines smart machines and real-time data sharing. The system is currently being tested on the Lucknow-Kanpur Motorway (Awadh Motorway).

It will collect project-specific data and instantly transmit it to stakeholders, including MoRTH. This real-time monitoring will ensure that construction stays on schedule and meets quality standards.

It will accelerate the construction process and ensure real-time monitoring and data sharing, thereby increasing project efficiency. This system employs intelligent machines to improve road quality, increase productivity, and reduce reliance on manual labour.

Why is AIMC needed?

AIMC aims to address issues that cause delays in national highway projects, such as outdated technology, inaccurate information, and contractor performance issues.

It will improve efficiency, increase road durability, and reduce delays as artificial intelligence and automation become more prevalent. The goal is to ensure that projects meet deadlines and avoid unnecessary disruptions.

How do AIMC machines work?

GPS-Aided Motor Grader uses GNSS data and angle sensors to precisely position the grader's blade. It compares real-time data to digital design plans to ensure accuracy.

The Intelligent Compaction Roller (IC Roller) reduces post-construction consolidation by eliminating air pockets or water voids in materials such as soil or concrete, which can cause road damage.

The Single Drum/Tandem Vibratory Roller compacts soil and base layers, ensuring stability in the final road structure.

Together, these machines will speed up the construction process and result in higher-quality roads.

Way Forward

AIMC will reduce delays by providing real-time data at each construction stage, allowing stakeholders to continuously monitor progress. These machines will help projects to complete on time by automating many processes and allowing for nighttime construction.
