Context:

The bridge, about 80 km from Jammu, spans a total length of 725.5 meters and features a main pylon standing at 193 meters above its foundation, towering 331 meters above the riverbed.

About Anji Khad Bridge

  • It is the smaller of the two main bridges on the line with a central cable span of 290 met The largest – across the Chenab River – will be the tallest arch railway bridge ever built at 321 metres.
  • Located in Reasi district, Jammu and Kashmir, it is part of the Udampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project.
  • It will connect Katra and Reasi and enhance connectivity between the Jammu region and the Kashmir Valley. It is built over the Anji River, a tributary of the Chenab River.
  • Built in the challenging Himalayan terrain, the bridge overcame difficult geological conditions, including seismic activity and fragile rock formations.
  • Indian Railways collaborated with IIT Roorkee and IIT Delhi for detailed site-specific surveys aimed at ensuring stability and safety of the bridge.

Features:

  • The bridge consists of four key parts: a 120-meter approach viaduct on the Reasi side, a 38-meter approach bridge on the Katra side, a 473.25-meter cable-stayed segment spanning the valley, and a 94.25-meter central embankment connecting the main structure to the viaduct.
  • The construction of the bridge included 96 cables ranging in length from 82 to 295 meters. A hybrid foundation was used to stabilize the slopes supporting the main pylon.
  • Advanced construction methods, including DOKA Jump formwork and pump concreting, have increased efficiency and safety.
  • It will facilitate the running of trains at speeds of up to 100 km/h.

  2. The bridge is built over the Anji River, a tributary of the Chenab River, and is expected to facilitate train operations at speeds of up to 150 km/h.

Which of the above statements is/are correct?

A) 1 only

B) 2 only

C) Both 1 and 2

D) Neither 1 nor 2

Answer: a

Explanation:

Statement 1 is correct: The Anji Khad Bridge is located in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir and is a key component of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project.

Statement 2 is incorrect: The bridge facilitates train operations at speeds of up to 100 km/h, not 150 km/h.

Indian Railways collaborated with IIT Roorkee and IIT Delhi for detailed site-specific surveys to ensure the stability of the bridge, especially given the challenging terrain
