Context :

  • Recently, The Union Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed a 2906 rupee crore contract with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL)
  • Under this contract, there will be procurement of Low level Transportable Radar (LLTR).
  • They are also known as Ashwini.

About Ashwini Radar:

  • The Ashwini Radar is a Low level Transportable Radar (LLTR).
  • It is an advanced active electronically scanned phased array radar utilising solid state technology.
  • It is capable of tracking aerial targets, ranging from high speed fighter aircraft to slower moving targets like Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) & helicopters.
  • It is developed through a joint effort between the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) & Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL).
  • This Radar is fully indigenous.

Key Features:

  • It has an Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) Which is integrated with electronic scanning in both azimuth & elevation.
  • It is providing 4D surveillance
  • The radar is designed for mobility. It ensures that it can operate in various terrains & in dynamic environments.
  • It is equipped with advanced Electronic Counter Countermeasures (ECCM).
  • It can counter electronic warfare threats.
  • The radar can automatically detect & track aerial targets like fighter jets & slow moving objects such as UAVs & helicopters.
