Context

  • NASA recently received its first sample of asteroid Ryugu, which was returned to Earth last December by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency’s (JAXA) Hayabusa2 spacecraft.

 

About

  • It is a near-Earth object and a potentially hazardous asteroid of the Apollo group.
  • It measures approximately 1 kilometre in diameter.
  • Ryugu was discovered in 1999 by the Lincoln Near-Earth Asteroid Research (LINEAR) project.
  • Ryugu is orbiting the sun between Earth and Mars and occasionally crosses Earth's orbit.
