The Prime Minister unveiled health cards under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) in order to ensure health coverage to people who are aged 70 years and above.

It is a health card launched as a part of the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY).

Objectives

It aims to address the ageing population of India, which is projected to reach 19.5% or 319 million elderly by 2050 to reduce anxiety over high healthcare costs.

It ensures that the elderly are empowered with swabhimaan or self-respect to ensure that they have no fear of high healthcare costs.

Eligibility

Citizens who are aged 70 years and above, irrespective of income or economic status are eligible for the scheme.

Private Insurance Holders are also eligible to avail Ayushman Bharat as an additional safety net.

Health Coverage

The card will provide free health coverage up to 5 lakh rupees annually per family.

Coverage

It covers those who are already enrolled in Ayushman Bharat, Central Government Health Services(CGHS), Ex-Serviceman Health Services(ECHS), and Employees State Insurance Corporation(ESIC).

They can also switch or retain current coverage under the schemes.

Nearly 6 crore individuals among the 4.5 crore families will be covered under the scheme.

Funding 

₹3,437 crore is allocated for the current and next fiscal year for the scheme.
