Context:

Recently, The Karnataka government's decision to open Bhimgad Wildlife Sanctuary for wildlife safaris has been controversial and is facing strong opposition from environmentalists.

Why the controversy?

  • Environmentalists are concerned that the increased human activity will disrupt the delicate ecosystem & lead to deforestation and habitat loss.

What is a Wildlife Sanctuary?

  • Under Section 26A of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972, an area can be declared a sanctuary if it has important ecological, faunal, floral, geomorphological, natural or zoological value.
  • This provision allows for the conservation, propagation or development of wildlife and their environment.
  • Such areas may include any reserved forest or parts of territorial waters that are considered important for conservation purposes.

About Bhimgad Wildlife Sanctuary

Location

It was declared a sanctuary in December 2011 Situated in Western Ghats, Belgavi District, Karnataka

Etymology

It was named after Bhimgad Fort, built by Shivaji in the 17th century to defend against Portuguese troops.

Geography

Adjacent to Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary (east), Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary (north-west), Netravali Wildlife Sanctuary (north) in Goa, and Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary (north) in Karnataka. Western boundary shows the limestone formations & caves.

Rivers

It is the source of rivers like Mhadei, Malaprabha, and Tillari rivers with perennial streams.

Fauna

Home to tigers, leopards, gaur, sloth bears, sambar, spotted deer, chitals, wild dogs, king cobras, elephants, & other endangered species. It also provides critical tiger corridors between Karnataka & Goa.

Flora

Tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests and grasslands. Rich in medicinal plants.

Special Features

Barapede caves, the only known breeding site of the Wroughton's free-tailed bat, a threatened species.
