Context: 

Recently, Invasive Burmese pythons are a major problem for Florida's wildlife. So, Scientists at the University of Florida are working on better ways to find and remove these pythons. Their latest study shows that the best time to remove pythons is during the wet season & at night. This will help to catch more pythons & protect Florida's native animals.

About Burmese Pythons:

  • Size: One of the largest snake species, Burmese pythons can grow up to 20 feet long & weigh over 250 pounds. Females pythons are typically larger than males.
  • Behavior:
    • They are non-venomous.
    • They are active mostly at night.
    • They are capable of staying underwater for up to 30 minutes.
    • They mostly spend their time hidden in the underbrush, moving only when hunting or feeling threatened.
  • Taxonomy:
    • They were once considered a subspecies of Python molurus until 2009.
    • But now recognized as a distinct species.
  • Habitat:
    • They are Found in diverse habitats, including grasslands, swamps, marshes, woodlands, caves, rainforests, mangrove forests, & river valleys.
  • Native Range:
    • They are native to eastern and northeastern India, Myanmar, southern China, Southeast Asia, and parts of the Indonesian archipelago. 
    • They also covers eastern Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh.
  • Invasion in Florida:
    • Burmese pythons have become an invasive species in Florida due to the pet trade & causing harm to the local ecosystem.
  • Conservation Status:
    • They are Classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature).
