About the Carriage of Goods by Sea Bill 2024

It replaces the outdated Indian Carriage of Goods by Sea Act 1925.

It introduces simpler and more effective provisions for governing the carriage of goods by sea.

Key features of the Bill

  • It establishes clear responsibilities, liabilities, rights, and immunities for carriers transporting goods via sea routes.
  • It complies with the International Convention for the Unification of Certain Rules of Law relating to Bills of Lading (Hague Rules) and its subsequent amendments.

Indian Ports Bill 2025

Alongside the Carriage of Goods by Sea Bill, 2024, the Indian Ports Bill, 2025 was introduced in the Lok Sabha to integrate port-related laws, facilitate port development, simplify business operations, and maximize the use of India's coastline.

It proposes the creation of state maritime boards to oversee non-major ports and establishes a maritime state development council for coordinated growth in the port sector.

It provides clear guidelines on pollution control, disaster management, security, safety, navigation, and data management at ports.
