The Union Minister for Women and Child Development Participated in the 69th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW).

About Commission on the Status of Women

It is the principal global intergovernmental body dedicated exclusively to promoting gender equality and the empowerment of women.

It was established in 1946 by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the CSW plays a crucial role in shaping global standards on gender equality and documenting the reality of women's lives worldwide.

The CSW consists of 45 member states elected by ECOSOC based on equitable geographical distribution:

  • 13 members from Africa
  • 11 from Asia
  • 9 from Latin America and the Caribbean
  • 8 from Western Europe and other States
  • 4 from Eastern Europe

Members serve four-year terms and are responsible for representing their respective regions in discussions and decision-making processes.

The 69th Session of CSW (2025)

The 69th session of the Commission on the Status of Women took place from March 10 to 21, 2025, at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

  • Review and appraisal of the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.
  • Assessment of current challenges affecting gender equality.
  • Contribution toward the full realization of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action

Adopted in 1995, the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action remains the most comprehensive international roadmap for achieving gender equality and the human rights of women and girls worldwide. The Platform identified 12 critical areas of concern where action was urgently needed, including:

● Economic participation and opportunity

●  Education and training

●  Health

●  Violence against women

●  Human rights

●  Institutional mechanisms for the advancement of women

The 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration provided an opportunity to review progress made and challenges remaining in implementing this landmark agreement.

The 69th Session aimed to adopt two key documents:

  • A political declaration on the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.
  • A multi-year programme of work that will determine the themes for the next four CSW sessions.
