Stranded sea cow named ‘Jamil’

Context  

A second orphan baby dugong is also known as sea cow has been named Jamil.

 

 

 

About 

 

  • Dugong or Sea Cow is a sea-grass eating mammal which is found in waters
  • The sea cow is found stranded on a southern Thai beach.
  • Southern Thailand’s waters are home to about 250 mammals classified as vulnerable. 
  • The name Jamil means a “handsome sea prince” 
  • The name, given by Princess Sirivannavari “is from the Yawi language, and it means ‘handsome prince of the sea’.
  • It was found that the princess has also set up “working teams for the conservation of Thailand’s sea and corals and marine animals.

Note: A baby dugong dubbed ‘Mariam’ washed ashore on its beaches last month and her antics went viral on social media.

  • IUCN Status - Vulnerable
  • Habitat - Coastal areas, shallow to medium deep, warm waters with seagrass beds
  • Largely dependent on seagrass communities for subsistence and is thus restricted to the coastal habitats which support seagrass meadows

Jaipur makes it to UNESCO World Heritage Site list

Context 

Jaipur city has been awarded UNESCO World Heritage tag.

 

 

About

 

  • The announcement was made at the 43rd Session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Baku. 
  • The Walled City of Jaipur, known for its iconic architectural legacy and vibrant culture.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed happiness that the city has been recognized as a World Heritage Site.
  • The World Heritage Committee is composed of representatives of 21 States Parties to the World Heritage Convention who meet annually. 
  • The Committee is in charge of implementing the Convention. To date, 1,092 sites in 167 countries have been inscribed on the World Heritage List.
  • ICOMOS (The International Council on Monuments and Sites) had inspected the city in 2018, and post its nomination. 

 

Historical facts of Jaipur

 

  • The historic walled city of Jaipur in Rajasthan, was founded in 1727 AD under the patronage of Sawai Jai Singh II. 
  • It serves as the capital city of the culturally-rich state of Rajasthan.
  • The city was proposed to be nominated for its value of being an exemplary development in town planning and architecture that demonstrates an amalgamation and important exchange of ideas in the late medieval period.
  • In town planning, it shows an interchange of ancient Hindu, Mughal and contemporary Western ideas that resulted in the form of the city.
  • In addition, the city is associated with living traditions in the form of crafts that have national and international recognition.

Soon, contraceptives for animals

Context:

The central government has launched a project for undertaking ‘immunocontraceptive measures’ for population management of wild animals.

 

 

About:

 

  • The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MOEFCC) has launched a project for undertaking for population management of four species of wild animals — elephant, wild boar, monkey and blue bull (Nilgai).
  • The project was approved by the Finance Ministry. 
  • The Wildlife Institute of India (WII) and National the Institute of Immunology (NII) will develop the immunocontraception.
  • The pilot project will begin in Uttarakhand and then implemented in the rest of the country.
  • In Africa, the system has worked in private reserves with a relatively small elephant population, where every individual can be easily identified.

 

Challenges:

 

  • The birth-control method has been tried in Africa in areas like the Kruger National Park but added that the implementation of such a project in India will not be a simple task.
  • It will involve multi-disciplinary effort over a long period of time.
