Context

Recently, The Forest Advisory Committee (FAC) under the Ministry of Environment has recommended a research & development proposal to use Extended Reach Drilling (ERD) technology in the Dibru Saikhowa National Park.

However, there is a condition that the technology will be used only for research purposes with in the park boundary.

About Dibru Saikhowa National Park

Situated in

South bank of the Brahmaputra River in the eastern part of Assam, India

Boundary

It is Bounded by the Brahmaputra and Lohit Rivers (north) and Dibru River (south)

Status

Dibru-Saikhowa Wildlife Sanctuary (1986) & Dibru-Saikhowa National Park (1999)

Vegetation

It mainly consist of moist mixed semi-evergreen forests & moist mixed deciduous forests

Special Feature

It is the Largest salix swamp forest in northeastern India

Tropical monsoon climate with hot and wet summers & cool, dry winters

Flora

It Includes species like Dillenia indica, Bischofia javanica, Bombax ceiba, & Lagerstroemia parviflora

Fauna

It is home to animals like Tiger, Elephant, Leopard, Jungle Cat, Bears, Small Indian Civet, Squirrels, Gangetic Dolphin, Slow Loris, & Assamese Macaque

Bird Species

It is Identified as an Important Bird Area (IBA) with over 382 species of birds, including Greater Adjutant Stork, Lesser Adjutant Stork & Greater Crested Grebe
