About Black Seadevil Fish

  • It belongs to the anglerfish family (Melanocetidae)
  • It also is called as the "black devil" due to its dark hues, sharp teeth, & monstrous shape.
  • Habitat : This fish found in the deep ocean at 2,000 meters in darkness & high pressure environments.
  • IUCN Red List: Least Concern
  • Black Seadevil Fish Features :
    • This fish has a large head, glassy sharp teeth.

Why is the Sighting Unique?

  • The black demon fish is found at depths of 200 to 2000 metres, where sunlight cannot reach.
  • It is adapted to life in the deep sea.
  • The fish uses a bioluminescent appendage on its dorsal fin to attract prey.
  • The glowing bait attracts small fish, which are then caught by the fish's sharp teeth. This method is similar to the one depicted in the movie Finding Nemo.
  • Fish near the surface are not common. There may be possible reasons for this:
    • Illness or injury, which may have caused it to stray from its deep-sea habitat.
    • Changes in ocean currents.
  • The fish was found injured and died a few hours after being seen. Its body was transferred to the Museum of Nature and Archaeology in Santa Cruz de Tenerife for further study.
