  • A team of Canadian researchers claim to have discovered two new minerals from their analysis of the world's ninth-largest meteorite discovered in Somalia.

Details

  • These two brand-new minerals were part of the El Ali meteorite in Somalia. And were discovered in the slice of the gigantic meteorite El Ali.
  • The newly discovered minerals have been named elaliite, and elkinstantonite. The name 'elaliite' comes from the rock's location of El Ali town, while 'elkinstantonite', pays tribute to Lindy Elkins-Tanton, the principal investigator of Nasa’s upcoming Psyche mission that aims to send a spacecraft to a metal-rich asteroid.

Note: Meteorites are formed when the meteors survive through the Earth's land and atmosphere. Such samples are taken and serve as an excellent source to discover new minerals. The research team also identified a new mineral that needs a review and further analysis.
