Context

• Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has said that Electronic Manufacturing Cluster in Dharward will greatly benefit the people of Dharward and surrounding areas.

EMC Scheme

• To make India a global player in the field of Electronics Manufacturing and to offset disabilities faced by industries for reliable infrastructure, Electronics Manufacturing Clusters (EMC) scheme was notified in 2012.
• The aim is to provide support for creation of world-class infrastructure for attracting investments in the Electronics Systems Design and Manufacturing (ESDM) Sector.

Grant assistance

• Greenfield EMC - 50% of project cost subject to a ceiling of Rs. 50 crore per every 100 acres of land.
• Brownfield EMC - 75% of the project cost subject to a ceiling of Rs. 50 crore per project.

EMC 2.0 Scheme 

• The EMC 2.0 Scheme provides financial assistance for setting up of both EMC projects and Common Facility Centres (CFCs) across the country. The Scheme is open for receipt of applications for a period of 3 years from the date of notification.

EMC at Dharwad

• The EMC project will cover an area of 224.5 acres at a cost of over Rs 179 crore, comprising central financial assistance of over Rs 89 crore.
• Nine companies, including start-ups, have already committed to make investment of Rs 340 crore with employment potential of 2,500 people.

Significance of EMC at Dharwad

• It will boost Karnataka’s strides in the world of manufacturing and innovation.
• The cluster will attract one thousand 500 crore rupees in investment and create 18 thousand jobs, which will strengthen the economy of the district as well as the state.
