Recently the Gharchola sarees of Gujarat received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag and became the 27th GI tag holder from Gujarat.
It is traditionally worn at weddings within Hindu and Jain communities.
They are traditionally crafted in auspicious colors of the Hindu community like red, maroon, green, and yellow.
It used to be made in cotton but now silk is predominantly used.
The word ‘ghar’ means home, and the word ‘chola’ means outfit, thus the literal meaning of the term ‘Gharchola’ is ‘outfit for home’.
It is a single-colored saree with white spots.
The network of squares in the saree is created by rows of white tie-dyed spots or rows of zari. If there are 12 squares, it is known as ‘bar bagh,’, and if there are 52, then ‘Bavan bagh’.
Each box in the grid like pattern of the gharchola is bordered with zari or metal-work.
The motifs are mainly of parrots, peacocks, elephants, dots, human figurines, etc. The symbols also sometimes include symbols of fertility and prosperity.
Gharchola is a variant of Bandhani/tie and dye saree. As this tie-dye technique requires a good quality of water to make the colors vibrant, thus gharcholas are mainly made in Khambat and Jamnagar of Gujarat.
