The Indian government has cancelled the release of the Good Governance Index 2023.
It is a biennial ranking tool launched in 2019 by the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG).It evaluates states and Union Territories (UTs) on governance quality based on over 50 indicators across sectors like agriculture, economic governance, public health, and citizen-centric governance.
The government decided not to release the GGI 2023 because the data collected during 2023, and releasing it at the end of 2024 would make it outdated. Instead, the government plans to carry out a fresh assessment and release the next edition in December 2025.
The last GGI was released on December 25, 2021, by the Union Home Minister. Gujarat topped the rankings among big states, and 20 states showed improvements in their composite scores compared to the 2019 rankings.
The DARPG initially planned to release the GGI 2023 during Good Governance Week (December 19-25, 2023). However, the release was delayed to ensure the relevance and accuracy of the data.
The GGI provides a detailed assessment of governance quality across states and UTs.
It helps to identify best practices, highlights areas for improvement, and promotes healthy competition among states to enhance governance standards.
The government plans to conduct a fresh governance assessment and release the next Good Governance Index in December 2025 to ensure the data remains current and relevant for evaluating governance quality.
