About Great Nicobar Island (GNI)

With an area of ​​910 km2, GNI is one of the largest islands of the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are a group of 836 islands in the Bay of Bengal.

Location: Located at the southernmost tip of the Nicobar archipelago (520 km from Port Blair). Indira Point, formerly known as Pygmalion Point, lies at the tip of the GND and is the southernmost point of the country.

Ecological properties:

  • Tropical moist evergreen forests, mountain ranges reaching a height of 642 m (Mt. Thullier) and coastal plains.
  • Fauna: Edible Macaque, Nicobar Shrew, Dugong, Nicobar Megapod, Serpent Eagle, Saltwater Crocodile, Sea Turtles etc.
  • Flora: Cyathea albosetacea (tree fern), Phalaenopsis speciosa (orchids), gymnosperms, bryophytes, and lichens, etc.
  • Ecological landscape: Great Nicobar Biosphere Reserve, Campbell Bay National Park, and Galathea National Park.
  • GNI was included in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves as part of the UNESCO Man and Biosphere Program in 2013.

Socioeconomic characteristics:

  • Important tribes: Mongoloid (Shompen, Nicobarese).
  • Settlers and mainlanders numbering over 8,000 live along the southeast coast of the island and engage in agriculture, horticulture, and fishing.
