Context:

Students pursuing undergraduate degree programs may soon have the option of completing their degree earlier or extending it beyond the specified time frame.

New Guidelines of UGC

The University Grants Commission (UGC) introduced flexibility for undergraduate students to complete their degrees earlier through Accelerated Degree Programmes (ADPs) or extend them beyond the standard duration through Extended Degree Programmes (EDPs).

Role of the National Credit Framework (NCrF)

The NCrF enables students to progress through their curriculum at faster or slower rates by earning the necessary credits, allowing for the implementation of both ADPs and EDPs.

National Credit Framework (NCrF)

It was introduced as part of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 to allow students with different learning abilities to progress through the curriculum at their own pace by earning required credits. It encourages flexibility, skill integration, and multidisciplinary education.

It allows credits to be earned across multiple disciplines, including vocational education. Credits can be obtained through activities such as classroom teaching, internships, sports, research, and social work.

How do ADPs and EDPs differ in terms of study duration and credit requirements?

ADPs enable students to complete a three- or four-year degree in less time by earning more credits per semester.

EDPs allow students to extend their degree duration while taking fewer credits per semester, addressing personal, financial, or academic challenges.

How will it be implemented?

HEIs will form committees to assess student eligibility for ADPs and EDPs, develop academic content, credits, and assessment methods, and set aside up to 10% of their sanctioned student intake for ADPs.

Degrees received through ADPs or EDPs will be equivalent to standard-duration degrees and will be accepted for employment and academic purposes.

When will students be eligible to apply for ADPs or EDPs?

Students will be able to apply for ADPs or EDPs at the end of their first or second semester, subject to review by a panel formed by the HEI.
