  5. They are among the largest lizards in America.  Their size can range from 3 to 6.5 feet & it weigh between 8 to 17 pounds.
  6. Some other types of iguanas are found in places like Fiji & Galápagos Islands.

They Prefer tall trees for sunlight & safety.

They are Good swimmers and stay close to water.

2. Size and Appearance

Green Iguanas: They can Grow up to 6 feet and weigh 8-17 pounds.

Females are smaller & they have black rings on tails.

They also have non lethal venom for defense.

3. Types of Iguanas

Green Iguana: Most common. And they are found in Mexico and Brazil.

West Indian Rock Iguanas: Endangered, they are found in the West Indies.

Land Iguanas: they are Found in Galápagos.

Marine Iguanas: these are only iguanas that can swim.

Desert Iguanas: they are Small. And they are found in Mojave & Sonoran deserts.

Chuckwallas: They are Found in arid regions of North America.

  • There is A recent study. It suggested that the ancestors of Fiji's iguanas may have crossed the ocean on floating plants.
  • This method of traveling is called rafting.
  • So, now This idea challenges previous theories that the iguanas crossed land or came from an extinct group.

2. What is Rafting?

  • Rafting is when small animals travel across oceans on floating trees or plants.
  • It is common among small creatures. But lizards like iguanas can travel long distances too.
  • Iguanas can survive long trips because they have a slow metabolism. It also allows them to go without food for a long time.

3. Past Examples of Rafting

  • In 1995 scientists saw the green iguanas. they rafted 300 km in the Caribbean on debris from a hurricane.
  • Also, Galápagos Islands Iguanas are believed to have traveled 1,000 km from South America to the islands on floating vegetation.
