India and France have signed a MoU to develop the world's largest National Museum, Yuga Yugeen Bharat, in New Delhi. The project will inspire cultural collaboration and strengthen India-France's strategic partnership. The partnership includes defense, space, civil nuclear, economic, and maritime collaboration, with India's ISRO and France's CNES working on research programs and satellite launches.

India and France signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to develop the world’s largest National Museum, Yuga Yugeen Bharat, through adaptive reuse of historic North and South Blocks.
Yuge Yugeen Bharat is an under-construction museum in New Delhi, that will be the world's largest museum, covering 117,000 square meters and housing 950 rooms. It will be housed in the existing Secretariat buildings, both north and south blocks, and will take over as India's national museum. |
The External Affairs Minister emphasised that the project would inspire the "remaking of Bharat." He also highlighted the significance of this MoU as a symbol of international cooperation and cultural collaboration. According to the minister, culture is important in soft power, and the collaboration with France strengthens the two countries' strategic partnership.
India and France established diplomatic ties in 1948, and their relationship has grown stronger over time. In 1998, both countries elevated their relationship to a Strategic Partnership.
The Agreement on Defence Cooperation was signed in 2006 and was renewed in 2016, serves as the framework for defence-related activities. India's purchase of Rafale jets, as well as the opening of a DRDO office in the French Embassy in 2023, highlight the country's strong defence relations.
India's ISRO and France's CNES have worked together on numerous research programs and satellite launches, including the successful launch of GSAT-24 in June 2022.
The civil nuclear agreement was signed in 2008, leading to France's involvement in the Jaitapur Nuclear Power Project. The two countries are also looking into Small Modular Reactors (SMR) and Advanced Modular Reactors (AMR).
India and France have strong trade and investment ties. Bilateral trade totalled $13.4 billion in 2022-23, a 7.72% increase over the previous year. France is India's 11th largest investor, with FDI inflows totalling $10.5 billion between April 2000 and March 2023.
The India-France Roadmap on Blue Economy and Ocean Governance was adopted in 2022 and has laid the groundwork for future maritime collaboration.
