The Prime Minister of India received Kuwait's highest honour, the Order of Mubarak Al-Kabeer, in recognition of his efforts to strengthen India-Kuwait relations.
It is a prestigious award presented by the Kuwaiti government to the heads of nation, sovereigns of foreign countries, and members of foreign royal families.
Queen Elizabeth II, former US Presidents George HW Bush and Bill Clinton, Saudi King Salman, and former French President Nicolas Sarkozy are among the notable recipients of this award.
It was established in 1974 to commemorate Mubarak Al Sabah, also known as Mubarak Al-Kabeer, who ruled Kuwait from 1896 to 1915. He played an important role in Kuwait's independence from the Ottoman Empire and shaping the country's future.
India-Kuwait Relations
India and Kuwait have a long history of friendly relations. India has always been an ideal trading partner for Kuwait.
Until 1961, the Indian rupee was Kuwait's official currency. Before the discovery of oil, Kuwait's economy depended on maritime activities such as shipbuilding, pearl diving, and fishing.
Over the years, India and Kuwait have exchanged high-level visits, strengthening their diplomatic ties. Vice President Dr. Zakir Husain visited Kuwait in 1965, Prime Minister Smt. Indira Gandhi in 1981, Vice President Shri Hamid Ansari in 2009, Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2024.
Kuwait is India's sixth-largest crude oil supplier, thus playing an important role in its energy security.
The visit aimed to strengthen cooperation in the defence, trade, and strategic sectors.
India and Kuwait have signed a number of important agreements, including a comprehensive defence treaty and memorandums of understanding in sports, culture, and solar energy.
The Indian PM invited the Kuwaiti Investment Authority to look into new opportunities in sectors such as energy, pharmaceuticals, food parks, and infrastructure.
The visit also marked the evolution of India-Kuwait relations into a strategic partnership.
