Context:

The Rubber Board has launched two new initiatives, iSNR (Indian Sustainable Natural Rubber) and INR Konnect.

About the Indian Sustainable Natural Rubber (iSNR) platform

The iSNR platform is an initiative by the Rubber Board to boost the global value of Indian natural rubber and promote sustainable production.

It is designed to help the Indian rubber industry comply with the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).

The platform issues a traceability certificate to verify the origin of rubber products and ensure they meet EUDR standards.

About the Rubber Board

It is a statutory organization established under the Rubber Act of 1947 for the overall development of the rubber industry.

It functions under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry with its headquarters in Kottayam, Kerala.

It is headed by a Chairman appointed by the Central Government.

About the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR)

It is a law implemented by the European Union to prevent the import and sale of products within the EU that are linked to deforestation and forest degradation, to ensure that only "deforestation-free" commodities can be sold on the EU market.

About the INR Konnect

Around 20-25% of rubber plantations remain untapped due to low rubber prices and rising production costs. Plantations owned by absentee landlords also suffer from neglect, leading to significant crop losses.

INR Konnect is a web-based platform that connects growers of untapped rubber plantations with interested adopters.

The portal aims to maximize plantation productivity by certifying the participating parties, providing training on production management and sustainable practices, and maintaining a database of certified tappers.

About Natural Rubber Plantation in India

Natural rubber is a raw material obtained from the latex (milky sap) of rubber trees, mainly Hevea brasiliensis. The latex contains a polymer called polyisoprene, which gives rubber its unique properties.

Rubber trees grow in tropical climates with annual rainfall between 2000 and 4500 mm.

They prefer deep, lateritic fertile soil with an acidic pH of 4.5 to 6.0 and low phosphorus levels. Temperature should range from 25 to 34°C, with 80% relative humidity.

India is the world’s fifth-largest producer of natural rubber and the second-largest consumer globally. Around 40% of the country’s natural rubber demand is met through imports.

Kerala is the leading producer of rubber in India, accounting for about 74% of the country's total rubber output.
