INFLUENZA B AND SWINE FLU

Local Circles survey indicates rising Influenza B and H1N1 cases in Delhi, with 54% households reporting swine flu symptoms. Influenza B infects primarily humans with slower mutation, causing typical flu symptoms. H1N1 swine flu, a variant of influenza A, spreads via respiratory droplets, treatable with antivirals and vaccines, and requires care.

Context:

According to a survey by Local Circles, there is an increase in cases of Influenza B and H1N1 Delhi, with 54% of households experiencing symptoms of swine flu.

About Influenza B

Influenza B exclusively infects humans, unlike influenza A, which can also infect animals.

Due to its limited host range, influenza B viruses generally do not cause pandemics (global epidemics) like influenza A viruses.

Influenza B viruses mutate at a slower rate than influenza A viruses, meaning they change their genetic and antigenic properties less frequently.

It can cause a variety of symptoms, including fever, headache, chills, cough, congestion, and body aches.

Like other influenza viruses, influenza B spreads through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks.

Most people recover from influenza B within a week with rest and hydration. Antiviral medications, such as oseltamivir (Tamiflu) are used to treat.

Swine Flu

It is a respiratory infection that primarily affects pigs, but human infections can occur.

People can become infected through close contact with infected pigs, contaminated environments, or, in rare cases, through person-to-person transmission.

Symptoms in humans are similar to those of seasonal influenza, including fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue.

Swine influenza is caused by several types of influenza A viruses, including H1N1, H1N2, and H3N2.

When an influenza virus that normally spreads in pigs but not people is found in a person, it is called a "variant influenza virus".

Antiviral medications can be used to treat swine flu, and a vaccine is available to protect against certain strains of the virus.

In 2009, a new strain of swine flu, H1N1, caused a global pandemic, but the World Health Organization declared the pandemic over in August 2010.

PRACTICE QUESTION

Q. Consider the following statements regarding Influenza B virus:

  1. It exhibits a slower rate of mutation compared to Influenza A.
  2. Antiviral drugs are ineffective against Influenza B infections.

Which of the above statements is/are correct?

A) 1 only

B) 2 only

C) Both 1 and 2

D) Neither 1 nor 2

Answer: A

Explanation:

Statement 1 is correct: Influenza B viruses mainly infect humans and generally mutate at a slower pace than Influenza A viruses.

Statement 2 is incorrect: Antiviral drugs like oseltamivir (Tamiflu) are effective against both Influenza A and Influenza B infections.
