Context: INS Androth, the second in the series of Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW SWC), was commissioned in Kolkata.

Details:

About:

  • It is built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE).
  • It is 77.6 meters long and 10.5 meters wide, with a draft requirement of just 2.7 meters.
  • Powered by three diesel propellers, these ships can reach a top speed of 25 knots

Aim:

  • It is to conduct anti-submarine warfare, low-intensity maritime operations, and mine clearance operations in coastal waters.
  • The ship is also capable of full-scale surveillance of coastal waters and various surface platforms and coordinates ASW and aircraft operations.

Weapons:

  • They will carry light torpedoes, ASW missiles and mines, a close-in weapon system (30mm gun) and a 16.7mm fixed remote-controlled gun.
  • The ASW SWC will also be equipped with a hull-mounted sonar and low-frequency variable depth sonar.

History:

  • The first ship was delivered in December 2022.
  • The contract for the construction of eight ASW SWC ships was signed on April 29, 2019.
  • The commissioning of two ships of the same class within three months reinforces the commitment to build indigenous ships as part of the Prime Minister's vision of 'AatmaNirbhar Bharat'. The ASW SWC ship will have more than 80% local content, thereby increasing employment and capabilities by ensuring large-scale defense production is carried out by Indian manufacturing units.
