About the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU)

It was founded in 1889 as the first multilateral political organization in the world to encourage cooperation and dialogue between all nations.

It was started by two Members of Parliament from the United Kingdom. Today, it has 181 national Member Parliaments, and also includes 15 Associate Members, which are mostly groups of nations or similar bodies.

The slogan of the IPU is "For democracy. For everyone." This means that the IPU works to promote democracy around the world and ensures that democratic values benefit all people, not just a few.

Objectives

Promotes democracy by helping parliaments to become stronger, younger, gender-balanced, and more diverse.

Defends the human rights of parliamentarians through a dedicated committee made up of MPs from around the world.

It holds meetings twice a year. The Governing Council is the main administrative and policy-making body of the IPU. It meets at each assembly and is made up of three MPs from each Member Parliament.

It holds Permanent Observer status at the United Nations.

It is mainly funded by its members out of public funds.

The headquarters IPU is located in Geneva, Switzerland.
