Context: The International Day of Forests, observed on March 21st each year, aims to raise awareness about the importance of forests and trees, and to encourage actions at local, national, and international levels to protect and sustainably manage them.

International Day of Forests

  • The International Day of Forests, established on March 21st by resolution of the United Nations General Assembly in 2013, serves as a global platform to raise awareness about the critical role forests play in sustaining life on Earth.
  • In 1971, the General Assembly of the European Confederation of Agriculture developed the concept of World Forestry Day. The United Nations selected March 21 because it coincides with the vernal and autumn equinoxes in the northern and southern hemispheres, respectively.
  • The organisers are the United Nations Forum on Forests and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in collaboration with Governments.
  • Themes of International Day of Forests 2024: “Forests and Innovation: New Solutions for a Better World”
