25th May, 2021 Economy

GS PAPER II: Indian Economy and issues relating to planning, mobilization, of resources, growth, development and employment.

Context: Nearly 1.2 tonne of fresh jackfruit from Tripura was for the first time exported to London, in a move that could potentially boost exports of agricultural and processed food products from the northeast.

  • India is the largest producer of jackfruit in the world, and long believed to be its place of origin.
  • It grows in the Western Ghats, in the south, and at scattered locations in the north and east.
  • It is eaten as a vegetable when tender, raw, or semi-ripe, and as a fruit when ripe.
  • It is state fruit of the Indian states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
