JAPANESE ENCEPHALITIS

Context:

  • National Institute of Animal Biotechnology, Hyderabad developed a technique for the rapid, sensitive and specific detection of the Non-Structural 1 (NS1) secretory protein, which is suitable biomarker for Japanese Encephalitis Virus (JEV).

 

Japanese encephalitis:

  • About: Japanese encephalitis (JE) is an infection of the brain caused by the Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV).
  • The Virus: JEV belongs to the family Flaviviridae and genus Flavivirus and exists in a zoonotic cycle.
  • Symptoms: headache, vomiting, fever, confusion and seizures.
  • Spread: spread by mosquitoes, specifically those of the Culex type. Pigs and wild birds serve as a reservoir for the virus.
  • Occurrence: The disease occurs in Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific. Japanese encephalitis (JE) is declared as a notifiable disease in India due to its expanding geographical distribution. Prevalent, particularly in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
  • Prevention: Japanese encephalitis vaccine, which is both safe and effective. Avoiding mosquito bites.
  • Treatment: Once infected, there is no specific treatment, with care being supportive.
