Context: 

Indian Navy is conducting “Julley Ladakh” (Hello Ladakh), an outreach programme to Ladakh to increase awareness about the service in the pristine state and to engage with youth and civil society there.

More about the Julley Ladakh outreach programme

• It is a Motorcycle Expedition being conducted in partnership with M/s TVS Motors
• It was a 5000km Motorcycle Expedition flagged off from New Delhi.
• The first phase of the expedition was flagged off from New Delhi on June 15 Jun and will reach Leh on 28 Jun
• It will pass through the states of Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir.

The main objectives of the current initiative in the Northern Territory were: -

(a) Celebrate Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav (75 years of Indian Independence).

(b) Conduct Awareness drives at Schools/ Colleges in the Ladakh region about the career opportunities Indian Navy offers including the Agnipath Scheme.

(c) Motivate Youth to join the Indian Navy.

(d) Showcase Nari Shakti, an initiative of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, by including Women Officers and spouses.

(e) Interact with naval veterans and Veer Naris in the region.

Other similar expeditions by Indian Navy

• The Navy had previously made a similar effort in the North East that was hugely successful.
• The Indian Navy had also undertaken the Sham No Varunah car expedition to engage with citizens in all the coastal states.
• They also paid homage to the Bravehearts at the Kargil War Memorial and those of the 1962 battle of Rezang La.

Battle of Rezang La

• The Battle of Rezang La was one of the few bright spots in the War of 1962 with China.
• On the battle day, 13 Kumaon’s C Company made their heroic last stand against the Chinese army in the high Himalayas of Ladakh and ward off a very significant threat.
• Rezang La is a massive 16,000-foot-high feature in the narrow gap between the higher mountains surrounding the strategic village of Chushul and the Spanggur Lake that stretches across both Indian and Chinese territories.
• For that reason, Rezang La is vital for the defence of the crucially important Chushul.
• Any invader reaching there would have an advantage of ways to access Leh.
• After the Battle, Major Shaitan Singh, for his exemplary leadership and extraordinary courage was awarded the Param Vir Chakra
