About Kawal Tiger Reserve

  • Location: it is situated in the Telangana State along the banks of the Godavari River. It forms part of the Deccan Peninsula Central Highlands.
  • Declaration: Kawal Wildlife Sanctuary was declared a Tiger Reserve in 2012 by the Government of India.
  • Geography: It is situated in the southernmost tip of the Central Indian Tiger Landscape. & it also connects with Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve (Maharashtra) & Indravati Tiger Reserve (Chhattisgarh).
  • Rivers: The reserve is a catchment area for 2 major rivers
    • Godavari and Kadam : these 2 rivers flow south of the sanctuary.
  • Mountain Range: within the Sahyadri Mountain Ranges.

Habitat and Vegetation

  • Habitat: Dense forests, grasslands, open areas, rivers, streams, & water bodies.
  • Vegetation: Southern Tropical Dry Deciduous Forests.
  • The vegetation consists of species :
    • Teak
    • Bamboo
    • Anogeissus latifolia
    • Mitragyna parviflora
    • Terminalia crenulata
    • Terminalia arjuna
    • Boswellia serrata

Flora and Fauna of Kawal Tiger Reserve

  • Flora:
    • Teak & Bamboo are the dominant species here
    • Other species include Anogeissus latifolia, Mitragyna parviflora, Terminalia species, & Boswellia serrata.
  • Fauna: Nilgai, chousingha, chinkara, black buck, sambar, spotted deer, wild dog, wolf, jackal, fox, tiger, leopard, & jungle cat.
