Context: A study by Indian researchers has found that the traditional fermented bamboo shoot from Tripura has anti-obesity properties.

Details:

Researchers from the Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST), an autonomous institute under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), has unveiled the anti-obesity potential of the traditional fermented dish known locally as 'Melye-amiley.'

About 'Melye-Amiley’

It is a traditional fermented bamboo shoot variety of Tripura. It has anti-obesity effects and offers a solution to weight management and metabolic health. It reduces lipid accumulation and increases fatty acid β-oxidation.

Techniques

  • Based on in vitro cell culture studies it has been observed that a traditional fermented bamboo shoot variety of Tripura can reduce intracellular lipid accumulation.
  • The process involved an increase in the expression of lipolytic (HSL, LPL, and Agtl) and fat browning regulator genes (UCP1, PRDM16, and PGC1-alpha).
  • The techniques of fermentation have been as old as a human civilization that has passed through generations, mainly used to preserve food, enhance nutritional quality, and also to enhance taste and flavor.
  • Based on the environment, availability of food materials, and traditional knowledge of the community, the techniques and the products vary.
  • This process stimulates mitochondrial biogenesis and enhances fatty acid β-oxidation, offering a multifaceted approach to weight management and metabolic health.
  • These findings suggest that fermented bamboo shoot extract has promising anti-obesity effects by boosting energy expenditure in white adipocytes.

Significance

The findings highlight the multifaceted benefits of Melye-amiley extract for metabolic health. By reducing intracellular lipid accumulation and promoting fat burning, the fermented bamboo shoot extract could serve as a natural and cost-effective alternative to conventional weight-loss methods.

About Bamboos

They are a diverse group of mostly evergreen perennial flowering plants making up the subfamily Bambusoideae of the grass family Poaceae.

Giant bamboos are the largest members of the grass family.

The internodes of bamboos can also be of great length.

The origin of the word "bamboo" is uncertain, but it probably comes from the Dutch or Portuguese language, which originally borrowed it from Malay or Kannada.
