About International Solar Alliance (ISA)

It is a global initiative that promotes solar energy solutions to address climate change. It was formed as a collaboration between India and France following the COP21 conference in Paris in 2015.

It is a treaty-based intergovernmental organisation with over 120 countries (104 member countries and 16 signatory countries), the majority of which are located between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. As of now, the ISA has 104 member countries and 16 signatory countries,

The ISA’s Framework Agreement came into force in 2017 and was amended in 2020, allowing all United Nations member states to join.

Countries that are not in the Tropics can join the alliance and enjoy the same benefits as other members, with the exception of voting rights.

The headquarters of the ISA is located in Gurugram, Haryana, India.

The ISA’s mission is guided by the ‘Towards 1000’ strategy to achieve three major goals by 2030

  • Mobilize USD 1,000 billion of investments in solar energy.
  • Provide energy access to 1,000 million people worldwide.
  • Install 1,000 GW of solar energy capacity.
