About:

  • The Prime Minister of India will flag off MV Ganga Vilas; World’s Longest River Cruise on 13th January 2023.
  • On the occasion, the Prime Minister will also;
    • Inaugurate the tent City at Varanasi.
    • Lay the foundation stones for several inland waterways projects.
    • Inaugurate Haldia Multi-Modal Terminal in West Bengal.
    • Inaugurate Maritime Skill Development Centre at Guwahati, Assam.
    • Lay the foundation stone for a ship repair facility at Pandu Terminal, Guwahati, Assam.

MV Ganga Vilas:

  • The Cruise will start its journey from Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh) and reach Dibrugarh (Assam) via Bangladesh.
    • It will travel around 3,200 km in 51 days.
    • It will sail across 27 river systems in India and Bangladesh.
  • It has accommodation for 36 tourists, with all the luxury facilities.
  • The 51 days travel will cover 50 tourist spots including World Heritage Sites, National Parks, River Ghats, and major cities in Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Bangladesh and Assam.
  • It will boost the tourism sector, provide employment opportunities and ensure the socioeconomic development of the region.

Tent City at Varanasi:

  • It has been planned near the Ganga River to utilize the tourism potential of the region.
  • It will provide accommodation facilities for tourists in Varanasi.
  • Every year the tent city will be operational from October to June and it will be dismantled for three months in the rainy season due to the rise in river water level.
