Context: A new species of Cyrtopodion (Cyrtopodion Vindhya) was discovered in Dahod and Panchmahals of Gujarat district.

About Palearctic naked-toed geckos:

  • Genus: Cyrtopodion
  • They are a group of gekkonid lizards
  • The newly discovered reptile is a nocturnal species, associated with granite boulders.
  • They come out of the crevices and crevices of the rock after dusk and retreat with some trepidation and can be found on the ground as well

Distribution: arid regions of north Africa, Arabia, and Central Asia to northwestern India. 23 species are currently recognized, with the diversity concentrated in Pakistan and Iran

India-specific details:

  • The Indian member of the genus Cyrtopodion is one of the most popular geckonid families in the country. There are currently six species of the genus known in India.
  • India has emerged as a hotspot of gecko diversity in the last three decades with more than half of the geckos reported/described from the country.
  • From about 61 million in 1996 to 136 at the end of 2019.
