- The Union Government in 2008 declared 11th November as the National Education Day to honor the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the first education minister of independent India.

Role in Freedom Struggle
- He was a journalist, freedom fighter, politician, and educator.
- He was a strong supporter of Hindu-Muslim unity and opposed the concept of partition.
- He founded the Urdu weekly journal Al-Hilal in 1912, and the journal Al-Balagh in 1915.
- He supported the Non-Cooperation Movement (1920-22) and joined the Indian National Congress in 1920.
- He was arrested in 1930 for breaking the salt laws during the Salt Satyagraha and imprisoned in Meerut for a year and a half.
- He became President of the Indian National Congress in 1940 and served until 1946.
