More About National Maritime Day

  • The day was first observed in 1964. On this day in 1919, the SS Loyalty, the first ship of The Scindia Steam Navigation Company Limited, set sail for the United Kingdom, a major milestone in India's maritime history at a time when sea routes were controlled by the British.
  • Every year, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways observes this day. It is observed to express thanks to the courageous men who spend months at sea carrying out the majority of India's trade and commerce on a worldwide scale.
  • The theme for 2023 National Maritime Week is 'Amrit Kaal in Shipping'.
