About the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO)

It was established in 2010 to regulate organ donation and transplantation in India.

It works under the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

It implements the National Organ Transplant Program (NOTP) and carries out activities as per the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act (THOTA) 1994.

How does NOTTO work?

  • It works with Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organizations (ROTTOs) and State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organizations (SOTTOs)
  • It provides financial support to states and institutions to expand the number of transplant centres.
  • It provides support systems for living donors, such as insurance support.

Role of NOTTO

  • It coordinates the procurement of organs and tissues from deceased donors.
  • It coordinates the distribution of organs and tissues for transplantation.
  • It maintains a registry of organ and tissue donations and transplants.
  • It coordinates the storage of organs and tissues.
  • It coordinates the transportation of organs and tissues.
  • It promotes organ donation and awareness of organ and tissue transplantation.
  • It trains people in organ and tissue donation, retrieval, and transplantation.
  • It monitors organ and tissue transplant services and develops policies and programs to improve them.
  • It follows up with post-transplant patients and living donors to assess graft rejection and survival rates.

In India, Organ donation is regulated by the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act 1994. The act allows both living and deceased donors to donate their organs.
