About Police Commemoration Day

India observed Police Commemoration Day on 21st October 2024 to honor the bravery and sacrifices of police personnel.

Background

Police Commemoration Day value originates from an incident that took place in 1959. On that day, a patrol party from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Intelligence Bureau set out to find a missing reconnaissance team in the challenging terrains of Ladakh.

The patrol party of 20 brave personnel faced a surprising raid by the Chinese Army (PLA), they were outnumbered and heavily outgunned, however, the officers displayed extraordinary courage. They fought bravely, and ten CRPF personnel lost their lives during this encounter, becoming martyrs and symbols of bravery in Indian policing.

About Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)

It was established in July 1939, as the Crown Representative’s Police, it was renamed CRPF after independence in 1949. Currently, it works under the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Its main function is to help state and union territory police forces in maintaining law and order and providing internal security.

CRPF helps maintain public order during large events, protests, and riots.

It plays a crucial role in counter-insurgency operations, particularly in regions affected by Naxalism and insurgency.

CRPF ensures the smooth conduct of elections by providing security at polling stations and during the transportation of election materials.

CRPF personnel are deployed in UN peacekeeping missions.

About Intelligence Bureau (IB)

It was established in 1887, and it is one of the oldest intelligence agencies in the world.

It works under the Ministry of Home Affairs, and is responsible for gathering intelligence and countering threats to national security.

Key Functions and Roles

IB works to detect and counter espionage activities by foreign intelligence agencies.

It plays a critical role in preventing and investigating terrorist activities within the country.

IB monitors and assesses internal security threats, including political extremism and communal violence.

The agency conducts surveillance on individuals and organizations suspected of posing a threat to national security.

IB provides intelligence inputs to the government and advises on security matters.
