Context :

  • Recently, there was news that Madhya Pradesh is conducting a study on wolf ecology at the Nauradehi Wildlife Sanctuary.
  • The aim of the study is to better understand their habitat & behavior there.
  • Madhya Pradesh has largest wolf population in India.

About Nauradehi Wildlife Sanctuary

  • Location: The sanctuary covers 3 districts of Madhya Pradesh: Sagar, Damoh, & Narsinghpur.
  • History: It was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1975.
  • Size: It the largest wildlife sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh & It covers 1197 square k.m..
  • Geography: The sanctuary is situated on a plateau and it forms part of the upper Vindhyan range.
  • Corridor for Tigers: It serves as a corridor which connects the Panna Tiger Reserve & Satpura Tiger Reserve, and it also indirectly connects the Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve through the Rani Durgawati Wildlife Sanctuary.
  • Biogeographic Region: The sanctuary is classified under the Deccan Peninsula biogeographic region, and it is also part of the Ganges & Narmada river basins.

Drainage System

  • Yamuna Basin: 3/4th of the sanctuary is part of the Yamuna River basin, a tributary of the Ganga, with the Ken River being a major tributary.
  • Narmada Basin: 1/4th of the sanctuary falls in the Narmada river basin.
  • Rivers: The major rivers flowing through the sanctuary are the north flowing Kopra, Banner, Verma and Verma rivers. And these are tributaries of the Ken river.

Vegetation & Flora

  • Type of Forest: dry mixed deciduous forest type.
  • Major Trees Found: teak, saja, dhawda, sal, tendu (Coromandel ebony), bhirra (East Indian satinwood), & mahua.

Fauna (Animals)

  • Nilgai (Blue bull)
  • Chinkara (Indian gazelle)
  • Chital (Spotted deer)
  • Sambhar (Indian deer)
  • Black Buck
  • Barking Deer
  • Common Langur
  • Rhesus Macaque
  • Freshwater Turtles
  • Various birds like Spotted Grey Creeper, Cranes, Egrets, and Lapwings.
