Context:

The Indian Naval Sailing Vessel (INSV) Tarini successfully completed the 3rd leg of the Navika Sagar Parikrama II expedition.

On 18 February 2025, it entered Port Stanley. It was the most challenging leg.

About Navika Sagar Parikrama II:

  • The initiative is a part of the Indian Navy’s commitment to women empowerment & maritime excellence.
  • It is operated by 2 Lieutenant Commander women officers.
  • And both of them aim to promote ocean sailing, self-reliance, & celebrate India’s rich maritime heritage.
  • On 2 October 2024, expedition was started from Goa by the Chief of the Naval Staff.
  • Route: This will cover 40,000 km in 5 legs:
    • From Goa to Fremantle, Australia
    • Then from Fremantle to Lyttleton, New Zealand
    • And then Lyttleton to Port Stanley, Falkland Islands
    • After that from Port Stanley to Cape Town, South Africa
    • And the last Cape Town to Goa (final leg)

About INSV Tarini:

  • This is a 56-foot sailing vessel.
  • It was built by M/s Aquarius Shipyard Ltd.
  • It was inducted into the Indian Navy on February 18, 2017.
  • It has covered 122,223 km.
  • And it was also a key participant in the first edition of Navika Sagar Parikrama in 2017.
  • The vessel has advanced navigation, safety, & communication equipment.

What were the Challenges Faced in the Current Phase?

The vessel faced 3 cyclones during Point Nemo passage (the Oceanic Pole of Inaccessibility). 

Before successfully crossing Cape Horn, it crossed the treacherous Drake Passage

Significance:

This voyage shows the Indian Navy's expanding presence at sea.

And it is also dedicated to international cooperation.

It also celebrates women's empowerment by encouraging young women to explore careers in maritime and defense fields. 

The trip tells about India's naval history & it allows the crew to connect with people in the ports they visit.

Next stop: From Port Stanley, the INSV Tarini will go to Cape Town before returning to Goa, India.
