India ranked among the top 50 countries in the 2024 Network Readiness Index.

About Network Readiness Index 2024

The Network Readiness Index (NRI) 2024 ranks 133 economies, representing 95% of global GDP.

It assesses economies using 54 variables across four pillars:

  • Technology 
  • People 
  • Governance 
  • Impact

The report was published by the Portulans Institute, an independent, non-profit research and educational institute based in Washington, DC.

Performance of India

India is ranked at 49th in the NRI 2024, an increase from 60th in NRI 2023. The score increased from 49.93 in 2023 to 53.63 in 2024.

India secured the first rank in the following indicators:

  • AI Scientific Publications
  • AI talent concentration 
  • ICT services exports

India secured the 2nd rank in the following indicators:

  • Building Internet subscriptions
  • Mobile broadband internet traffic within the country
  • International Internet bandwidth

In the lower-middle income group, India came in second place, behind Vietnam.

Factors behind India’s Improved Ranking

According to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), teledensity increased from 75.2% to 84.69% over the last decades, and the Digital India initiative increased the number of internet users from 25.1 crore to 94.4 crore.

India climbed from 118th to 15th place in the world's mobile broadband speed rankings after the introduction of 5G services in 2022. With the Bharat 6G Vision, India aims to establish itself as the leader in emerging telecom technologies.
