Context:

Recently, Deep-sea fishing survey  was conducted by the Fisheries Survey of India (FSI). This survey has discovered new, rich fishing grounds in the Arabian Sea funded by the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana scheme.

Details:

The survey covered areas from Kollam in Kerala to Goa. It was discovering areas with abundant fish & crustaceans such as shrimp, prawns & various fish species.

These findings are important to boost India's fishing industry & it also ensures food security when coastal fisheries are facing pressure because of overfishing & climate change.

key facts about Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY)

The Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) is a scheme of the Government of India. This scheme aims at the sustainable development of the fisheries sector.

  • Launch: The scheme was launched in 2020 with an investment of 20,050 crores.
  • Duration: The PMMSY is being implemented from FY 2020-21 to FY 2024-25.
  • Objectives: The main objectives of the PMMSY are to:
    • Increase fish production & productivity.
    • Modernise & strengthen the fisheries sector.
    • Generate employment opportunity.
    • Enhance the income of fishers & fish farmer.
    • Ensures food & nutritional security.
  • Components: The PMMSY has 2 main components:
    • Central Sector Scheme (CS): This component includes activities like development of fishing harbors & landing centers, construction of fish seed hatcheries, & promotion of aquaculture.
    • Central Sponsored Scheme (CSS): This component includes activities like development of infrastructure for fish processing and marketing, & providing financial assistance to fishers & fish farmers.
  • Coverage: The PMMSY is being implemented in all the States & UTs of India.
