Han Kang, a South Korean poet and novelist won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Literature.

About Han Kang

Han Kang became the first Korean to win the Nobel Prize Win in Literature, and the Swedish Academy praised her for her powerful writing that tackles human struggles and fragile emotions. 

She is best known for her novel The Vegetarian, which tells the story of a woman who stops eating meat and connects more with the plant world. This book, originally published in Korean in 2007, gained international attention when it won the International Booker Prize in 2016.

Han Kang’s work usually explores deep emotions and historical events. For example, in The White Book, she uses white objects like snow and salt to express grief over the death of her older sister. Her political novel "Human Acts" deals with the tragic massacre of students in the 1980s.

Nobel Prize in Literature

The Nobel Prize in Literature was started in 1901 and is given to authors who create outstanding works that have an idealistic direction.

The prize is decided by the Swedish Academy, they go through the writer's entire body of work, not just one book. The academy announce the winner in early October, and this award is one of the five Nobel Prizes that Alfred Nobel established in his will in 1895.

Traditionally, the Literature prize is the last one given during the Nobel Prize ceremony.
