Details

  • The Palianytsia missile is a long-range drone missile newly developed by Ukraine.
  • Named after a type of Ukrainian bread, “Palianytsia” carries cultural significance that has turned it into an symbol of resistance for the country.
  • The completion of its development was done in 18 months.
  • Need: Western allies including United States do give Ukraine long-range armaments but rule out their usage within Russian territory as a result of fear for escalation. • The project involved both private sector inputs and contributions from state-owned design bureaus, spurred by a grant program initiated by the Ukrainian government.
  • In addition, faster innovation and production were made possible through deregulation of defense industry.
  • The missile is launched from a ground-based platform.
  • It features a turbojet engine.
  • The Palianytsia has a 700-km range (like ATACMS).
  • The missile is capable of striking approximately two dozen Russian military airfields.
  • It is significantly cheaper than similar missiles.
  • Ukrainian missile drone Palianytsia costs less than US$1 million a piece.
