  1. Recently, Maharashtra Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary made progress with its first honey harvest.
  2. It’s aim was empowering the local tribal community by promoting sustainable beekeeping practices.

1. Location and History:

  • Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the Murud & Roha talukas of Raigad district
  • It was established to protect a coastal woodland ecosystem of the Western Ghats.
  • Previously this area was part of the hunting reserves of the princely state of Murud Janjira.

2. Geography and Vegetation:

  • The sanctuary has hilltop forests that are mostly evergreen.
  • Tree species include Anjan (Memecylon umbellatum) & Phansada (Garcinia talbotii).
  • dry deciduous forests : species such as Ain, Kinjal, Teak, Hirda, Jamba, Mango, & various Ficus
  • The sanctuary has 710 species of plants including 179 tree species 66 shrubs, & 141 herbs.

3. Fauna:

  • leopard is the major carnivore.
  • Other mammals : hyenas, jungle cats, palm civets, sambar, barking deer, bonnet macaques, wild boars, & the Malabar giant squirrel.
  • There are also 148 species of birds, including the Pied Hornbill, 3 toed Kingfisher, Malkoha, & Pitta.
  • 90 butterfly species, including Common Map, Black Prince, Nawab, & Blue Mormon.
  • poisonous & non-poisonous snakes as well

4. Ecological Significance:

  • The sanctuary also preserves the unique coastal & Western Ghats ecosystem.
  • It also supports a diverse range of flora and fauna.
