Mount Adams

Context 

Mount Adams has recently shown a surge in seismic activity after remaining largely dormant for thousands of years.

Location and key facts 

Washington State, United States.

Adams has not erupted in more than 1,000 years; it is not considered extinct. It is the second-highest mountain in Washington, after Mount Rainier.

Type of Volcano

Stratovolcano- They have relatively steep sides and are more cone-shaped than shield volcanoes. They are formed from viscous, sticky lava that does not flow easily. 

The lava therefore builds up around the vent forming a volcano with steep sides. Stratovolcanoes are more likely to produce explosive eruptions due to gas building up in the viscous magma.

3,742 meters.

Known by some Native American tribes as Pahto or Klickitat.

Volcanic Field

Adams is one of the long-lived volcanoes in the Cascade Range.

Adams is the source of the headwaters for two major rivers, the Lewis River and White Salmon River.

Located along the Jordan River, along Jordan's western border with Israel and the West Bank.

West Bank Coverage

Comprises over one-fifth of the territory of the West Bank.

Lowest Point

Drops more than 1,400 feet below sea level at the Dead Sea (It is a landlocked salt lake between Israel and Jordan in southwestern Asia. Its eastern shore belongs to Jordan and the southern half of its western shore belongs to Israel), the lowest natural point on Earth's surface.

Population

Sparsely populated; notable community includes the city of Jericho in the West Bank.

Holds immense religious significance for Christianity, Judaism, and Islam.
