Non-communicable diseases (NCDs)

Communicable diseases such as infections have come under control but have been overtaken by NCDs; such as heart disease, diabetes, cancers, chronic lung diseases, and stroke kill an estimated five million to six million Indians each year.

They are affecting younger people. For example, many young professionals are now getting heart attacks or requiring dialysis due to diabetes. This is not a good sign for India because economic growth depends on a healthy workforce. If people are sick, they can’t work, and the country loses money.

Studies estimate that NCDs may already be costing India around 5%-10% of its GDP. A World Economic Forum (and Harvard School of Public Health) study projected that between 2012 and 2030, NCDs would result in a loss of around $3.5 trillion–$4 trillion on the Indian economy.

How to prevent these diseases?

NCDs can be preventive by making healthier lifestyle choices. For example:

  • Exercise Daily: Everyone should do at least 30 minutes of exercise every day, like walking, yoga, or playing sports.
  • Eat Healthy Food: People should eat more fruits, vegetables, and proteins while cutting down on sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats.
  • Avoid Bad Habits: Smoking, drinking alcohol, and eating junk food increase the risk of NCDs. Stopping these habits can help.
  • Get Regular Check-Ups: Early detection saves lives. For example, if someone gets a mammogram, doctors can find breast cancer early when it’s easier to treat.
  • Fight Pollution: Breathing dirty air causes lung diseases. Cleaning up the environment is part of staying healthy.

The government started the National Programme for Prevention and Control of NCDs. It also opened Health and Wellness Centres across the country where people can get free screenings and advice. However, the government needs to do more. For example, schools should teach kids about healthy eating, and cities should build parks where people can exercise.

Technology can play a huge role in keeping people healthy

  1. Smartphone Apps remind people to drink water, exercise, or take medicines on time.
  2. Wearable Devices: Fitness trackers monitor heart rate, steps, and sleep patterns. This helps people stay aware of their health.
  3. Artificial Intelligence (AI): AI predicts health risks. For example, an AI tool can analyze medical history, predict and even suggest measures to prevent.

Prevention is better than cure

Prevention is better than cure because it stops diseases before they start. Treating diseases after they happen is expensive and difficult.

Preventing NCDs is important because it saves lives and money. Healthy people can work better, earn more, and contribute to the economy. For example, if fewer young people get sick, India can grow faster and become a $5 trillion economy.

Preventing diseases costs much less than treating them. By focusing on prevention, India can keep its people healthy and happy.
