Context: The Tamil Nadu state government asserted before the Madras High Court it was committed to eradicating Seemai Karuvelam (prosopis juliflora), an invasive and exotic species, from the State due to its ill effects.

About prosopis juliflora:

  • Native species to: Mexico, South America and the Caribbean.
  • Invasive weed in: Africa, Asia, Australia
  • Ill- effects:
    • Contributing factor to continuing transmission of malaria.
    • It grows eggregiously in the forest areas and prevents the growth of other species.
    • It hampers movement of wild animals like elephants in the forests.
